PROJECTS

Laser Belt Length Measuring System

Project Overview:

In conjunction with a key technology supplier, the ‘Belt Length Measurement System’ was designed and configured to provide a means to very accurately measure the endless length of conveyor belt during operation without needing to perform machine isolations.

The instrument is configured in a portable form to allow easy transport of the equipment from conveyor-to-conveyor. Previous methods of belt length measurement required personnel to use a manual counter wheel or time-based method to measure belt length. These methods are typically not very accurate and required conveyors to be stopped and isolated to allow access. The non-contact device allows the accurate measurement of the belt from a safe stand-off distance of 1mtr from the moving belt typically without the need to isolate machinery.

To-date, there are several measuring units operated by Continental AG Services that have produced over 2500 scans across Australia allowing end-users to order & prepare belt-lengths with confidence and minimise wastage.

Scope of duties performed:

  • Application research and conceptual design lead

  • AS 4024 Design Risk Assessment lead (SiD RA’s throughout project)

  • Development of safety performance level requirements

  • Coordinated and led the affiliated design team to complete prototype design and selection of equipment & components

  • Mechanical design & drafting

  • Oversaw fabrication & commissioning of prototypes

  • Performed live field testing of prototypes

  • Led design reviews & approvals for commercialised product

  • Authored equipment IOMM (Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual)

  • Oversaw commercial product release
